I’m worried that I don’t have time to start orthodontic treatment. What should I do?

At Zeifman Orthodontics, we understand that our patients may have busy schedules. That’s why we aim to be as flexible as possible. For your convenience, we have two office locations with the latest, up-to-date technologies to make your treatment faster and more effective with fewer in-person appointments. We also stay open until 6:00 pm—later than most orthodontic offices—and offer a free online consultation if you can’t make it to one of our office locations. When should my child start orthodontic treatment?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, kids should have their first orthodontic consultation around age seven. During the consultation, we will examine your child’s teeth and mouth to determine if any orthodontic treatment, such as braces, is needed, and then we can proceed from there. Most children do not need braces until they are between the ages of 9 and 14.

Can I still get braces as an adult?

Absolutely! Patients of all ages are welcome to get braces. With today’s modern technology, we have many different options to help you achieve your perfect smile in a more discreet and comfortable way. In fact, 1 in 4 orthodontic patients today are actually adults.

Is there a difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

While all orthodontists are dentists, not all dentists are orthodontists. Both work with teeth, but an orthodontist receives an additional three years of special training. An orthodontist also focuses on issues with your bite and jaw rather than just the teeth. At Zeifman Orthodontics, Dr. Zeifman is board certified, which means she has worked even more hours and completed a rigorous certification exam to become the best orthodontist she can be.

Do braces hurt?

While braces may feel uncomfortable, they should not hurt. When you first receive your braces, you can expect your mouth to feel some pressure and discomfort. You may also feel some discomfort after they are adjusted. But don’t worry! This will ease over time, and we also have tips to help relieve your discomfort. You can rinse your mouth with warm salt water, apply wax to a wire or bracket that is giving you trouble and take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.

How long do I have to wear braces?

Everyone is different. However, Phase I treatment is typically about a year, while a full treatment is typically 1.5 – 3 years. If you come to your appointments on time, wear rubber bands as instructed and avoid eating sticky and hard foods that may damage your braces, you’re on track to have your orthodontic treatment finished as fast as possible.

Why do I have to wear retainers after getting my braces off?

Wearing retainers is the last step, called retention, in your orthodontic treatment. Retention is important because we don’t want your teeth to shift after getting your braces off! Since your teeth try to shift back to their original positions, wearing your retainers will prevent any changes to your new smile.
