Am I Too Old For Braces?

When you hear the word orthodontics, do you think of teenagers in bulky metal braces? This is such a common stereotype because, for a long time, it was accurate more often than not But, things are changing. Nowadays, orthodontic patients can be any age imaginable. Of course, we do treat a lot of teens, but adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment, too. In fact, there’s been an enormous increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment in recent years. Currently, about 1 in every 5 orthodontic patients is over the age of 18!

If you’ve spent a lifetime unhappy or self-conscious of how your teeth look and feel, and have been wondering, “am I too old for braces?”, the answer is you’re never too old! Zeifman Orthodontics is proud to offer various treatment options to correct crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, incorrect jaw positioning, and more. To learn a bit more about what orthodontics is and how it can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, keep reading below!

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialty under the banner of orthodontics. An orthodontist is a dentist who has received years of additional education and training to identify and correct bite problems, straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaws, and improve your mouth’s overall function.

An experienced orthodontist like Dr. Zeifman works to diagnose, prevent, and treat all these issues any others you could imagine. If issues such as these are untreated, they can get worse over time, leading to premature wear and tear on your teeth, gum tissue, and bone. This may cause face and neck pain, headaches, and even difficulties chewing or speaking.

Orthodontists can diagnose and treat these types of issues, improving both the function and appearance of your smile.

Why are more adults choosing orthodontic treatment?

There are several reasons we’ve seen more adults exploring orthodontic treatment. We often understand more about how oral health connects to our total body health as we get older. For some people, this understanding inspires them to seek dental or orthodontic treatment so they can take better care of their teeth and gums.

We also talk to many adult patients who received incomplete orthodontic treatment earlier in life who now want to finish the process. Touch-up treatment is also common. Teeth that were straightened in a patient’s younger years can shift over time due to age, genetics, or improper retainer use. We have multiple options in these cases, including monitoring your teeth, providing new retainers, or re-treating with braces or aligners.

Then, the adults have never had treatment before but are simply looking to improve their smile’s cosmetic appearance. This boosts their confidence and self-esteem and can even positively affect their personal and professional lives.

Orthodontic options for adult patients

Whatever the reason for seeking orthodontic treatment as an adult, there are more choices available than ever before to give you a complete smile makeover. At Zeifman Orthodontics, we are proud to offer the following treatment options.

Damon Smile and Damon Clear braces

Damon braces are self-ligating, eliminating the need for elastic or metal “ties” using a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth to place. These clips reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth and require fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace. Using gentle, low-friction force means less discomfort, and the “shape memory” titanium wires are very light. This innovative treatment option has several features, including:

  • freedom of movement, resulting in faster treatment times with gentler forces
  • precision and effectiveness
  • less discomfort than traditional braces
  • smaller, more comfortable braces that are easier to keep clean

While the time needed in braces varies from case to case, treatment time with the Damon System is typically much faster than with conventional braces. It requires fewer appointments during treatment as well, making your Damon experience convenient and hassle-free. The Damon System is also available in clear brackets for patients who want their smile to feel and look great during treatment.

Inbrace

Inbrace is the newest in orthodontic technology! Like traditional braces, it works by applying gentle yet continuous pressure on the teeth to shift into the desired positions slowly. However, Inbrace uses just a few robotically bent wires behind the teeth to create a beautiful custom smile.

The process for lingual braces involves taking a digital impression (scan) of your teeth. Next, we send the impression to a dental laboratory where it’s used to create the customized wires. This takes about six weeks and, once complete, allows us to cement the braces onto the back surfaces of your teeth.

Invisalign clear aligner therapy

The Invisalign system comprises clear, customized, removable plastic trays that fit the teeth and ease them into the desired positions. You replace these aligners with the next in the series every 1-2 weeks to keep up with the shifting teeth. This system offers patients a bit of freedom and flexibility not available with fixed braces since you can remove the aligners when eating or drinking. It also makes your oral hygiene routine much simpler since you can brush and floss normally.
