If you’ve been looking into orthodontic treatment, then you already know there’s a lot to consider before taking the leap. Here at Zeifman Orthodontics, one of the questions we hear most often from potential patients is, “how much will braces cost?” There’s no doubt that orthodontics can improve your oral health and give you a beautiful smile, but it does require an investment! Because every smile is unique and each patient responds to treatment in their own way, there’s no way to answer how much braces cost with an umbrella answer. Generally speaking, there are several contributing factors that go into calculating orthodontic treatment fees, including:
- the type of orthodontic appliance
- if the braces are for a child or an adult
- the orthodontic issues being treated
- the estimated treatment length
- if the patient’s insurance covers orthodontics
- the orthodontist providing treatment
- the area in which the patient resides and receives treatment
Each of these will play a significant role in the total cost of braces. For example, metal braces are generally one of the least expensive treatment options, while clear or lingual braces may cost slightly more. The patient’s age will also be taken into consideration, as treatment for children and teens will often be slightly less expensive than treatment for adults. Similarly, a patient with a complex case may create more work for the orthodontist and require more follow-up appointments. This could translate to longer treatment times and higher fees than someone with a milder orthodontic issue.
Something else to look at is how the chosen orthodontist has set up their pricing structure. This will usually be based at least in part on the region in which they practice. Dental insurance is another factor—many patients have dental insurance, but it may or may not pay a portion of their orthodontic treatment. As you can see, treatment fees are never “one size fits all!” Let’s take a closer look below at what you can expect from treatment with Zeifman Orthodontics, including what’s covered in the total cost, what the average cost of braces is, and what payment options are available.

Is there an average cost for braces?
We went into it in some detail above, but there are many factors that go into determining the exact cost of treatment for each patient. That’s why the cost will vary from case to case. We can still give you a general idea of the average cost, though! For a child, treatment with braces can cost anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces will usually run about $5-8K in total. We know that braces can be a significant investment for most families, and we’re proud to offer affordable treatment options for every budget!
Will dental insurance cover orthodontic treatment?
While there are a number of dental insurance plans that will cover orthodontic treatment in part or full, the coverage rules and policies can often be fairly confusing. Fortunately, our team has years of experience in working with insurance companies and will work with you to ensure you receive the maximum coverage from your plan!
Dr. Zeifman will not recommend a certain treatment type based on whether or not your insurance will cover it. Instead, she’ll create a customized plan to address your unique needs, lifestyle, and goals. Once you’ve had your consultation and decided on a treatment plan, check with your provider to see what they will and will not cover in the way of orthodontic treatment.
For your convenience, we’ll be happy to help with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses are estimated before the treatment process begins. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments are received, we will reconcile the account. Patients will be responsible for any underpayment at this point.
If insurance will not cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?
If braces are deemed to be medically necessary, the dental health care costs associated with them can sometimes be tax deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions would kick in. If you want to deduct the cost of braces, keep track of all expenses associated with them, including co-pays and check-up visits.
Will Medicaid cover the cost of braces?
Treatment costs may be covered by Medicaid if the braces are considered to be medically necessary. To learn more about this possibility, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/. It is important to ask about the percentage of coverage and the lifetime maximum before proceeding with treatment.
